Monsters were marketed for horror, not dark romance. Thus, Count Orlok is ugly and evil. He has nothing to offer except a thrill. Spike is still a monster, but he appeals to a wider audience. He is not scary, unless he is killing people. Spike is loyal and funny, and the audience likes him. He is a vampire sex symbol when he behaves. Edward Cullen is the modern vampire sex symbol. Women and men across the world kiss Edward’s picture wishing they could be Bella. Edward is handsome, sweet, exciting and trustworthy. He is a fully rounded character with a past, present and future. Edward entices the viewer. Over the years, vampires have changed from the scary to the desired. Pop culture celebrates the undead rather than fears them and many American teenagers and moms would gladly invite a sexy stud of a modern vampire into their beds.
